Cal fracking best of the worst

California’s tortured relationship with oil goes back many years; the first Earth Day in 1970 was triggered by a giant 1969 oil spill off the Santa Barbara coast. So it shouldn’t be surprising that the state is moving at a glacial pace to decide the rules for hydraulic fracturing (AKA fracking) in the Monterey oil formation--the largest oil shale reserve in the U.S., with approximately 15 billion barrels of oil just waiting to be tapped.
The battle over fracking in the state--which has dealt with unregulated fracking for the past 50 years)--is heating up. Just last month, state lawmakers defeated a moratorium on the practice. But only 39% of state residents support increased fracking, according to the Center for Biological Diversity. Here’s the problem: when it comes to the Monterey oil formation, fracking might not be the biggest danger. Acid jobs could be far worse.

It is an old well completion method that involves pumping chemicals such as hydrofluoric acid into wells to melt rocks and other impediments to oil flow, and companies are not required to report when they do it.
"These are super-hazardous, poisonous chemicals and we have no idea what they are doing out there with it - how deep it is going, the volumes - nothing," said Bill Allayaud of the Environmental Working Group. "Why shouldn’t our state agency be regulating it as we hope they’ll be regulating hydraulic fracturing?"

Ladies, why are we letting the menfolk dominate the grilling?

There’s a lot of innovation in grilling — everything from fancy briquettes to gadgets that help grill veggies to perfection.

But according to survey data from the NPD Group, one thing that’s not changing is who’s firing up the grill.

Men are more than twice as likely as women to be the primary griller in the household, according to the survey. Only 19 percent of households report that it’s women who are taking charge of grill duties.

And statistically, that hasn’t budged since the group started collecting data on this topic a few decades ago.

The grill “is the one and only male-dominated appliance in America,” says Harry Balzer of NPD Group. One reason? Grilling can feel like a form of recreation.

“Grilling is awesome,” my colleague Uri Berliner told me over a casual water-cooler chat. “All you have to do is stand there and drink beer while you watch the meat cook.”

So are gender roles fixed in stone when it comes to grilling? Not necessarily. There’s evidence that women are increasingly taking an interest.

Craig Goldwyn (aka Meathead) of the site AmazingRibs.com says 40 percent of the people who visit his site are women.

And Elizabeth Karmel of GirlsAtTheGrill.com sees a shift, too. She acknowledges that grilling is still male-dominated, but “I think it’s changing,” she told me by phone.

As a female grilling enthusiast, she says her goal is not to push men out of the way, “but rather for women to share in the fun.”

So what leads women to the grill, especially if it’s a job they had previously ceded to the men in the house?

Well, Karmel says, oftentimes for women it’s the realization that they’ve already done a lot of the time-consuming work, including shopping for the meat and prepping it.

So actually putting it on the grill? “It’s just the last step,” Karmel says. And grilling it yourself can add the quality control to ensure it doesn’t get burned or dried out (if the man in your house is prone to that sort of negligence).

“A lot of women have come up to me and told me that” kind of story, she says. And when they step into the role of grilling, “they love the positive reinforcement.”

And meat is just the beginning. These days, there’s grilled fruit and pizza, not to mention veggies.

Take asparagus: The grill, Karmel says, takes this veggie that your mom wanted you to eat and turns it into something that you can’t stop eating.

A lion and a miniature sausage dog have formed an unlikely friendship after the little dog took the king of the jungle under his wing as a cub.
Bonedigger, a five-year old male lion, and Milo, a seven-year old Dachshund, are so close that Milo helps the lion clean his teeth after dinner.
The 500lbs lion dwarfs little Milo, yet after the dog took the disabled lion into his protection as a cub, Bonedigger has rarely left his side.

The two have been inseparable over the past five years at G.W. Exotic Animal Park in Wynnewood, Oklahoma.
Bonedigger was born with a metabolic bone disease that left him mildly crippled.

He said: ‘This friendship between an 11 pound wiener dog and a 500 pound lion is the only of its kind in the world ever seen.
Mr Reinke, who lost both his legs after a bungee jumping accident, added that the friendship between Bonedigger and his pack is unique.
‘He wouldn’t be so friendly with other dogs - it’s all down to them being pals since he was a cub. ‘
Milo often gives his best lion impression, copying Bonedigger’s ‘puffing’ - a deafening lion growl that can be heard over a mile away.
Wild lions use it to communicate with other prides in their natural environment.
‘Milo does his best to copy Bonedigger when the lion tries puffing to communicate with other lions in the park ,’ added John.
G.W. Exotic Animal Park has recently been affected by the deadly tornado that swept through Oklahoma on May 20th.
The park was damaged and flooded, but is still managing to provide shelter for domestic and wild creatures that are homeless because of the storm.
